For Parents
PATIENCE....waiting until later for what you want now.
This entire month, we are talking about patience. This month we want to help children learn to think about the end of the matter, to see the benefit in delayed gratification. And we want for them to understand the power of patience..

What do we teach the kids...
What Matters Most
Our desire is to teach them what matters most. We all know that the Bible is filled with teachings from Genesis to Revelation and that's a lot to teach in just a few short years. Our goal is to focus on those teachings in the Bible that are the most helpful and the most relevant to our kids at every age. It's a strategy about teaching less for more. Think about it this way. What if our children knew about the things that mattered most at their age. It's likely that they will use more of what they know.
With the End in Mind
In PowerHouse, we want to teach with the end in mind. That means beginning with the end in mind. It's our desire that every child that moves from elementary to middle school learns 3 Basic Truths:
- I need to make the wise choice-(Wisdom)
- I can trust God no matter what-(Faith)
- I should treat others the way I want to be treated-(Friendship)
Jesus taught these same principles to His followers and we want to teach them even to His youngest of followers. In essence it all comes back to what Jesus taught as the Greatest Commandments in Mark 12:28-31. "'...Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength'. The second is this, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." That's what "teaching with the end in mind" means to us in PowerHouse.
With the 252 Basics Curriculum
In our Elementary PowerHouse program, we use The reThink Group's 252 Basics curriculum. This curriculum takes the kids on an even deeper journey of the three basic truths through 36 biblical virtues (such as determination, gratitude, and or resourcefulness). Our Elementary kids focus on one new virtue each month which spans over a three year cycle. Each of the virtues is intertwined to one of the three basic truths of Wisdom, Faith, and Friendship. In addition, throughout the three years (typically on a month with a 5th Sunday), there are 1 of 6 different faith skills that are taught:
- Navigate the Bible (learning how to use and find stuff in the Bible)
- Personalize scripture (learning to memorize scripture and how to apply it to their lives)
- Dialogue with God (learning about prayer and how to pray)
- Engage in Worship (learning how to use and find stuff in the Bible)
- Articulating faith (learning what we believe about God and Jesus and why)
- Worshiping with your Life (learning that worship is much more than just singing)
By using this strategy, we believe these three basic truths, Wisdom, Faith, Friendship, help to mold and teach every child how to live and who God wants them to be.
